The Storm by Elera The Storm by Elera
I've been meaning to do a Mickey and Minnie parody of this painting forever:…

I started this one a long, long time ago, and finally tonight (when drawing anything original failed), I went ahead and finished it up. Mine is pretty shabby and missing a lot of details, and I have pretty much no real digital painting knowledge...and I have this horrible tendency to forget to look at the reference enough. I just always wanna go, go, go. And then I always end up not looking up tutorials because I'm dumb and I try to figure things out for myself. One of these days I'm going to sit down and learn how to paint through actual research. And pay attention to references instead of doing what I want.

So yeah, I have my complaints about this one, but it looks way, way better than when it did when I picked it up tonight.

Mickey and Minnie are owned by Disney, picked up the texture from

I get why you're a bit dissatisfied with this one; I see a lot of what you're talking about.  But man, I gotta admit, for me, it's hard to really notice when all the stuff you did so, so well just pops right out at me.

To start with, your ability to mimic the look and feel of a real painting is astounding.  I don't just mean the texture of the brush strokes, though that's definitely a factor (and a gorgeous one, too); your choice to recreate the slightly-cracked texture of the dried paints from the original piece is a brilliant choice that gives the whole picture this extra air of authenticity, especially since it is so well rendered.
But as cool as your ability to recreate the original painting is, it's the ways you've changed things up that most appeal to me.  In particular, your posing and expressions give this version of the image a nicer, more relaxed feeling than the original; there, it felt like a tense race to get out of the storm as quickly as possible, but here, it feels like Mickey and Minnie are taking a bit more time to appreciate the rain.  I don't know if that was intentional, but I quite like it.
And as always, you do wonderful work with rendering and color and lighting.  There's such a rich depth to this pic that pulls me right into it, and I love that. <3

I usually try to avoid :+fav:'ing too many things a friend posts in a row to avoid the appearance of carelessness, but I'm afraid I can't help it here.  You've had too strong a streak for me to ignore. :+fav:

I adore the soft fine-paint textures of this, plus it's been a while since I've seen some Mickey & Minnie art.

I already commented on this on tumblr, but I shall say it again because this piece deserves ALL the praise! :D

I can definitely see the influence you were drawing from, but at the same time, you took a concept and realized it in your own way to make it unique. I actually really DIG the painterly, loose style of the digital painting, and I like the contrast between the background colors and the figures' colors (especially Minnie's dress) :3

You already know how much I love this one <3  The transparancyyyy

Every new thing you do, I can see your ability to make good colour choices just getting better and better.  It's always been a strength of yours, though.  This just has the most delicious late-summery, citrusy, sunsetty look.  Yum.
